Career Coaching for Tamariki / Students

Career Coaching for Tamariki / Students

It can be nerve wracking when you are trying to help the young person in your life decide NCEA options, develop self-awareness, identify job and career pathways, build networks, research the labour market and so the list goes on… but how do you even help them get started?

Check out the HIGH FIVE tips below, to get your kids started on thinking about the life journey that’s ahead of them (and they may even help you too!)

  • Change is constant – Help them recognise that the world around them is constantly changing and that being open to change and transition and remaining alert to new opportunities is important.

  • Learning is ongoing – Help them strive for continuous personal and professional development and stay motivated by learning new skills and developing new hobbies, skills and talents.

  • Focus on the Journey – Encourage them not to focus on one destination, but to recognise that their career journey will evolve throughout their lifetime, helping them to appreciate and value each experience along the way. Think about career constellations, not pathways.

  • Follow your heart - know yourself, believe in yourself and follow the HEART – Encourage them to pursue their passion to find career success. Help them discover ways to combine their interests with career opportunities.

  • Access your allies – Encourage them to rely on the support of family, mentors, co-workers (if they have a part-time job), friends and peers. Career development is a team effort.
